It’s been three days since Sparks played Revolution Hall here in Portland, and I’m still replaying it all in my head. I’ve been a fan for years, but seeing them that close, in a room where every lyric bounced between us like a shared secret, was something else entirely. Russell’s voice was sharp and alive, Ron barely moved but somehow said everything with that deadpan stare, and when the first chords of This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us hit, I swear the floor vibrated from the crowd’s roar. What struck me most wasn’t just the music; it was the feeling in the room, like we were all part of some inside joke that only Sparks fans understand. Walking out into the cool Portland night afterward, I felt that rare mix of joy and gratitude you only get from a show that truly matters.

Ahhhh, I was there. I was in the first row but off to the side, so I had a different perspective from that of the other US shows I've been to this tour. The atmosphere was, indeed, electric; it was a wonderful show all around. Beforehand, I was together with about 10 Sparks fans at the rooftop bar. It was magnificent seeing the sun going behind the mountains on a crystal clear evening and having Sparks to look forward to.
Did you also find it freezing in the venue?
The next morning, we (a small retinue of Sparkaholics) were off to the airport to fly to San Francisco for my last show of Sparkstember (7 shows in the US). I'm back in Boston now with such fond memories, a thousand pictures, and a raging ear infection. Was it worth it? Yes, indeed. _________________ better drop the requirement that everything be great |
