Whilst a repeat of the 21 night marathon of the Sparks Spectacular is extremely unlikely….ever…the demands for Sparks to return to Britain were such that Los Angelean brothers Ron and Russell Mael welcomed the opportunity to perform once again in the city that has embraced their music so wholeheartedly.
Choosing to partner two profoundly different albums with their current, and 21st, album ‘Exotic Creatures Of The Deep’ – as if to underline the diversity of a career that spans four decades – the two nights will see the masters of reinvention taking genre-hopping to a new level as they embrace glam rock, disco, art rock and pop opera. Adjectives such as non-conformist, wit and originality are frequently used to describe Sparks and their oeuvre, never more so than on the release in 2008 of ‘Exotic Creatures Of The Deep’:
“..a succession of devastatingly captivating hooks and laugh-out-loud lyrics — NME
“Sparks are one of those unexpectedly delightful eddies in the cultural river, and they are a vital one” — Rock n Reel
“The brave among us know for a fact that next to no one is making such criminally underrated and startlingly original music, in any genre, these days” – BBC online
“Matchlessly inquisitive and open-minded” — Uncut
‘Lighten Up, Morrissey’ from ‘Exotic Creatures Of The Deep’ will be released as a single on March 23rd on Lil Beethoven Records via Absolute/Universal. A performance on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross on BBC One will air on March 20th.
