Mojo Magazine Review: August 2005 Issue Sparks **** Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins Ahead of a new LP, the first in an on-going programme of Sparks reissues. Back in 1994, after a decade of always interesting but increasingly irrelevant releases, even the most ardent Sparks fan had given up hope of the Brothers Mael ever coming up with the goods again. Gratuitous Sax…, however, turned out to be a Liverpool-in-Istanbul-style comeback of all comebacks. With wondrous melodies (When Do I Get To Sing My Way – a top 10 single in Germany), show-tune perfection (The Ghost Of Liberace) and the sort of overwrought mania bordering on the unlistenable that only Ron and Russell know how to do (I thought I Told You To Wait In The Car), this was not just the sound of the Maels at peak form but one of the best records of the 90s. You’ll regret having missed it. David Buckley
